Pacing through architecture / Traversant l’architecture expose six réalisations majeures des architectes belges Paul Robbrecht et Hilde Daem.
Depuis 1975, le duo – dont la pratique est fortement liée aux arts contemporains et à l’histoire des formes architecturales – développe un travail ayant atteint une maturité inégalée sur la scène architecturale belge. Leur œuvre comprend à la fois d’importantes commandes internationales, telles que la rénovation de la Whitechapel Gallery de Londres ou la salle de concert de Bruges, et des constructions plus modestes – mais à leurs yeux non moins importantes – par exemple la cabane en Flandre.
Prenant la forme de courts-métrages, six tableaux vivants réalisés par le cinéaste Maarten Vanden Abeele montrent les bâtiments en mouvement. Fort de son expérience de photographe de spectacles de danse, Vanden Abeele a mis en images, comme nul autre, les différents tempos caractérisant l’architecture de Robbrecht & Daem.
Au fil de l’exposition, les films qui montrent les bâtiments sont confrontés au temps plus lent du processus créatif, lequel est présenté sur douze tables de travail. Pour la première fois, une sélection de documents issus des archives de l’agence sont dévoilés au public : esquisses, dessins, plans d’exécution et photographies de Kristien Daem offrent un aperçu de plus de trente projets. Mis ensemble, ces éléments offrent une image rythmée de l’œuvre de Robbrecht & Daem?; envisagés séparément, ils mettent en lumière un instant spécifique dans la genèse d’un projet.
Cette exposition fait signe à Bordeaux. Robbrecht & Daem sont les architectes lauréats du concours pour la réalisation des futures Archives municipales de Bordeaux qui ouvriront leurs portes en 2014 dans le quartier de la Bastide. Ils livrent par ailleurs, cet été, un chai pour le château Le Pin à Pomerol.
Paul Robbrecht (1950) et Hilde Daem (1950) ont créé leur agence à Gand en Belgique en 1975. Dès leurs premiers projets, leur travail s’oriente sur les liens souhaités entre l’architecture et les arts contemporains, une posture qui se matérialisera notamment à travers le projet clé de pavillons d’expositions pour la Documenta IX de Cassel en Allemagne en 1992. Par ailleurs, pour Robbrecht & Daem, la discipline est indissociable de la connaissance de l’histoire de toutes les formes architecturales. La salle de concert de Bruges livrée en 2002 marque un développement important de leur pratique. Aujourd’hui, de la Whitechapel Art Gallery à Londres à la place Rubens de Knokke (B) en passant par les futures archives municipales de Bordeaux, le duo entouré d’une équipe de 35 personnes, œuvre internationalement et à toutes les échelles.
Maarten Vanden Abeele
Formé au design et à la communication, le réalisateur bruxellois Marteen Vanden Abeele (1970) est reconnu essentiellement pour ses photographies des arts scéniques. Depuis 1992, il collabore avec de prestigieuses compagnies de théâtre et de danse et son travail auprès de la chorégraphe Pina Bausch lui a apporté une renommée internationale. Portant son intérêt sur la tension de contrastes extrêmes, Vanden Abeele dépasse le genre classique de la photo de scène comme le montre la série de photos pour la compagnie de théâtre bruxelloise dirigée par Jan Lauwers et pour laquelle il a remporté le prix Herman Teirlinck – theaterfoto 1997-1999. La première rétrospective de son œuvre, marquée par la diversité, a été présentée au MuHKA d’Anvers en 2000.

‘Pacing through architecture / Traversant l’architecture’ presents six major projects by Belgian architects Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem.
Since 1975, these two architects – whose work is closely linked to contemporary art and the history of architectural forms – have developed an approach that has achieved a level of maturity unequalled on the Belgian architectural scene. Their work includes important international commissions such as the renovation of the Whitechapel Gallery in London, a concert hall in Bruges, and more modest (but in their eyes no less important) buildings such as a wooden cabin in Flanders.
Six tableaux in the form of short films made by filmmaker Maarten Vanden Abeele show the buildings ‘in motion’. Using his experience as a dance photographer, Vanden Abeele has, in a uniquely evocative way, filmed the different rhythms that characterize Robbrecht & Daem’s buildings.
As they walk through the exhibition, in addition to the films of the buildings, visitors will also discover the contrastingly slower tempo of the creative process, presented on twelve work tables. For the first time a selection of documents from the firm’s archives are been shown to the public: sketches, watercolours, plans and photographs of Kristien Daem offer fascinating insights into over thirty projects. Seen together, these elements offer a rhythmic image of Robbrecht & Daem’s work; seen separately, they spotlight specific moments in the birth of individual projects.
This exhibition has a particular resonance in Bordeaux, as Robbrecht & Daem have won the tender for the city’s future municipal archive building scheduled to open in 2014 in the district of La Bastide. This summer, they will also be completing a cask room for Château Le Pin in Pomerol.
Paul Robbrecht and Hilde Daem, both born in 1950, opened their firm in Ghent, Belgium in 1975. From the very start their work focused on linking architecture and contemporary art, an approach reflected, for instance, in their designs for exhibition pavilions at Documenta IX in Kassel, Germany in 1992. For Robbrecht & Daem, their chosen discipline cannot be separated from a knowledge of the history of all architectural forms. Their concert hall in Bruges, completed in 2002, marked an important development in their work. Today, along with a team of 35 people, they operate internationally and on a range of different scales, with projects including the Whitechapel Gallery in London, Rubens Square in Knokke, Belgium, and the future municipal archives building in Bordeaux.
Marteen Vanden Abeele
Born in Brussels in 1970 and trained in design and communication, Marteen Vanden Abeele is best known for his photographs of the performing arts. Since 1992 he has worked with top theatre and dance companies, and his work with choreographer Pina Bausch won him international acclaim. Focusing on the tension between extreme contrasts, Vanden Abeele steps beyond the classic genre of stage photography, as shown by the series of pictures he made for the Brussels theatre company headed by Jan Lauwers, for which he was awarded the Herman Teirlinck theaterfoto award. The first retrospective of his highly diverse work was presented at the MuHKA in Antwerp in 2000.
