album est la première exposition qui leur est consacrée en France après celles au Design Museum de Londres (2002), du Museum of Contemporary Art de Los Angeles (2004) et du musée Boijmans van Beuninguen de Rotterdam (2004) et bientôt au centre Pompidou-Metz (oct. 2011).
C’est donc avec le design que s’ouvre le programme des 30 ans d’arc en rêve. À l’ère de l’urgence écologique, il ne faut pas oublier que le design est né avec l’idée de la démocratisation du beau, qui se conjugue avec le bien-être. Dans les années 80, le design s’est propagé dans l’engouement général jusqu’à lui faire perdre son sens. Le mot design s’emploie encore couramment comme adjectif. On l’associe le plus souvent à un style, une mode, des formes fantaisistes, extravagantes… bref à des choses futiles. Le bouleversement de l’univers du design durant les dernières décennies, tant du point de vue esthétique qu’industriel et surtout sémantique, s’illustre aujourd’hui par le talent décidément infini de Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec.
À l’encontre de la représentation commune, cette exposition ne montre pas d’objets. Ici, le design est sujet : sujet de la recherche obstinée de Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec à produire la valeur ajoutée. Sujet de la création artistique entre artisanat et haute technologie. Sujet qui parle une langue inconnue qui touche l’intime. Sujet qui se meut entre nature et artifice. Sujet qui pose la question du pourquoi ? pour qui ? comment ? Sujet qui revendique son identité propre en jouant dans l’espace de l’art et de l’architecture. Sujet qui pense la relation au monde en quête d’absolu. Alors que nous entrons dans un monde de disparition des objets, que la conscience environnementale est d’ores et déjà prise dans la consommation des services, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec réfléchissent merveilleusement la relation culture & économie, création & industrie, dans la production des choses qui forment le cadre de vie entre matériel et immatériel.
L’exposition album découvre le processus de travail résolument tendu pour créer la beauté donnée à voir et à sentir comme une évidence.

Respectivement diplômés de l’École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs de Paris et de l’école nationale supérieure d’arts de Cergy-Pontoise, Ronan et Erwan Bouroullec s’associent en 1999 pour mener un travail au sein d’un dialogue permanent et d’une exigence commune vers plus de justesse et de délicatesse. Aujourd’hui ils sont édités par les plus grands industriels tels que Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Established & Sons, Axor Hansgrohe, Kartell, Kvadrat, Cappellini, Camper, Ligne Roset ou encore la Galerie kreo. Leurs créations appartiennent aux collections d’institutions telles que le musée national d’Art moderne, le centre Georges Pompidou, le musée des Arts décoratifs, le Museum of Modern Art de New York, l’Art Institute de Chicago, le Design Museum de Londres ou encore le musée Boijmans van Beuningen de Rotterdam.
arc en rêve centre d’architecture kicks off the year 2011 with an exhibition devoted to French designers Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec, whose work is a recognized as a major force on the international design scene.
album is the first exhibition of their work in France, following shows at the Design Museum in London (2002), at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles (2004) and the Boijmans van Beuninguen Museum in Rotterdam (2004) and soon at the centre Pompidou-Metz (Oct. 2011).
The 30th anniversary of arc en rêve thus begins with design. At a time when ecological concerns are of vital importance, it should not be forgotten that design was born from the idea of the democratization of beautiful things, combined with an idea of enhanced well-being. In the 1980s, design became so popular that it lost its meaning. The word ‘design’ is still commonly used as an adjective, referring to a style, a fashion, or bizarre or extravagant shapes: in a word, it generally refers to futile things. A paradim shift in the world of design over the last decades, in both aesthetic and industrial terms but also in terms of semantics, is illustrated by the outstanding talent of Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec. Running counter to the usual way of representing design, this exhibition does not present objects.
Design is a subject: it is the subject of research by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec aimed at producing added value. It is the subject of artistic creativity, halfway between craft and high tech. It is a subject that speaks an unknown language and involves people’s most intimate selves; a subject that hovers between nature and artifice; a subject that asks questions like Why? For whom? and How? A subject that assumes its own identity by trafficking in the domains of art and architecture, and which considers the relationship with the world at large as a quest for the absolute.
As we enter an age where objects tend to disappear and where environmental awareness is part and parcel of the way we consume services, Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec explore the relationship between culture and economics, artistic creation and industry, producing things that form a framework for life, halfway between the material and the immaterial.
The exhibition provides an insight into their highly disciplined way of working to produce beautiful things that can be looked at and touched as if they were simply meant to be.

Graduates, respectively, of the École nationale supérieure des arts décoratifs in Paris and the École nationale supérieure d’arts in Cergy-Pontoise, Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec began working together in 1999, forming an ongoing dialogue and building a shared approach whose purpose has always been to strive for the utmost relevance and finesse. Their work is now produced by top firms such as Vitra, Magis, Alessi, Established & Sons, Axor Hansgrohe, Kartell, Kvadrat, Cappellini, Camper, Ligne Roset and Galerie kreo. Their designs can be found in the collections of the Musée National d’Art Moderne, the Centre Georges Pompidou, the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, the Museum of Modern Art (New York), the Chicago Art Institute, the Design Museum (London) and the Boijmans van Beuningen Museum (Rotterdam).
